A Mother-Daughter Mental Health Retreat in the Swiss Mountains

The Inspiration

Years ago my youngest, then 18-year-old, asked me if we could get away for a few days in the mountains.

If a teenager makes a personal request to spend some time alone with you, may I suggest your answer always be immediate. Absolutely. Yes! Figure the details out later.

What proceeded was not quite what I expected.

She wanted to be awake all night and sleep all day. So that’s what she did.

I went for walks. Looked at the mountains. Reveled with the pine trees. And in the evening we would have dinner together, talk for an hour or two before she scuttled back to her nest.

I also made a zine. Here it is.

THe Hope

Re-think “going on vacation” together.

We used to have this idea that we had to do everything together. I have no idea why we thought that but it caused quite a lot of irritation when one person wanted to go for a hike and another person did not…and someone was forced to stay… or to go.

What if we actually have honest conversations about what we need and want, maybe? What if we then did the things together which were compatible…and did the other things by ourselves or someone else, which aren’t a match?
